Great Entry-Level Chess Board Mar 13, 2008
By Paul I bought this chess set for my 13-year old son's birthday. I'd looked all over the place in town and on the internet for a nice wooden board/pieces. Most were $40 and up. This one sounded right so I took the plunge and bought it unseen.
It's actually a very nice board/set. It's made in China (big surprise) and is not heirloom quality. What do you expect for $20 bucks?! However, if you're looking to step up from a cheap plastic board/set, this is a great one to start with.
The board is very nice. Mine sat very level on a flat table. I did NOT want a FOLDING board (screams "cheap"). There's nothing like playing on a solid, flat board. This one is just right.
The pieces are relatively light weight (my reason for 4 stars). Not that the pieces would fall over on their own; they even have a piece of felt underneath each piece to protect the wooden board. Still, if the pieces could have been just a little beefier, they'd be perfect. As is, they're fine and maybe I'm just being picky. However, this is not a set for the minivan trip. It's for playing on a solid surface (a table, the floor, etc). The pieces are a nice size to play with and learn with.
Speaking of pieces, I did NOT want a board with a drawer underneath for pieces storage. This one has an hollow underside (consider the wooden sides as sides of a wide and shallow square box) with elastic strips to hold each individual piece securely - a pretty cool idea. Even if the elastic is cheap and breaks/comes undone, it would not be hard to replace it yourself. This also makes it easy to account for all the pieces (unlike a boxed set: you just throw the pieces back in the box and hope you didn't miss any of them).
I don't recommend this set if you have infant children in the house as the pawns are quite small and might pose a danger for very young children. But for elementary-aged kids and up, this is a very nice set for the price.
2-thumbs up for value and overall satisfaction!

Just what we ordered! Jan 22, 2008
By Kansas Jo This is a beautiful chess set. My only wish would be for the chess pieces to be heavier but it didn't advertise them as "weighted" so we got exactly what we ordered. It arrived quickly and made it in time for Christmas. We are very pleased with this product and this company!

Great but... Apr 08, 2008
By K. Willis The chess set is wonderful, made of quality wood with a classy look. My only complaint is that the "feet" that support the board are uneven so the board rocks if it is on a level surface (like a table). A minor annoyance that brings the product to three stars because it is an easily fixable defect. On the other hand I could have just received the one that slipped through QC.

Quality Set Mar 10, 2009

This chess set is just what I was looking for. The board is Beautiful. It is raised with detailed edges, and sits flat with no rocking when on a flat surface. The pieces are lightweight, but that is not a HUGE isue with me. The one thing I was not wild about is the fact that the about eight of the felt pads on the bottom of the pieces were pretty far off center, and hanging off the edges of the piece base. It was rather noticable and I had to peel off, and re-glue them to compliment my wifes OCD. Because of this delay I adjusted my rating. Overall it is a quality product at a low price that is practical, and visually apealing. I Love it...

Great Chess Set, large and affordable Dec 10, 2008
By Charlie Kong Soo I was looking to upgrade to a wooden set as I already have several smaller plastic sets. I checked all the local stores but was unable to find a suitable one. They were either too small or not attractive enough.
When I checked on Amazon I found this set. It was the right size and was an affordable buy at $19.99. The suppliers shipped it very fast - I ordered other things from other suppliers and even though this was the largest and heaviest item it arrived first. So what's my review if it?
Well, first of all, it is an absolutely gorgeous set. The board is a light oak color with darker brown squares. The advertised picture doesn't do it justice. The photo makes it look as if it is very pale colored but it is actually richer hued.
The board is listed as 16 inches but that figure includes the inlaid borders, so the actual chess board measures approximately 11.5 x 11.5 inches with each square about 1.5 inches and the kings measure a little over 3 inches.
Still, it is a large board (weighs 6 pounds) with large pieces. Wood has a warmth and feel that plastic simply doesn't give you. This is the type of set that you can place on a coffee table as a showpiece. Even if you know nothing about chess it is very visually appealing.
I don't know about the wisdom of storing the pieces under the board with elastic bands unless you plan to put it away for a long period. If you want set up a board fast it would seem to be easier to store the pieces in the included Ziploc bags. When you are ready to play, just throw out the pieces and set up the board. In my opinion this would be faster than individually taking out 32 pieces from under the board. Of course, if you are a real chess fanatic you probably have the pieces out all the time. You shouldn't lose any pieces unless (a) you are really careless and disorganized or (b) you have really young children about the house who like to interfere with things; neither of these situations apply to me.
All in all, I am quite satisfied with this set. This was my first wooden set and I hope to derive many years of enjoyment from it. I would readily recommend this chess set to anyone.
